Cosa vuol dire cuor di leone?
Le sue prodezze con le armi sono ribadite da tutti i cronisti dell’epoca, anche quelli di parte avversa. Non stupisce pertanto che già i contemporanei lo abbiano chiamato Cuor di Leone (“Coeur de Lion” in francese, la lingua parlata a corte all’epoca, poi tradotto nell’inglese “Heart of Lion”) per il suo coraggio.

Approfittando della debolezza del re, i baroni si unirono per costringerlo a rispettare i loro diritti e privilegi, e nel 1215 lo obbligarono a firmare la Magna Charta (vedi nota). La Magna Charta libertatum, sanciva le «antiche libertà» d’Inghilterra, che il sovrano doveva impegnarsi a non violarla.

Richard was the son of King Henry II and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. He spent much of his youth in his mother’s court at Poitiers. During the last years of Henry’s reign, Queen Eleanor constantly plotted against him. Encouraged by their mother, Richard and his brothers campaigned against their father in France.
